Feb 2016 Update: A commenter alerted me that the following method may no longer work properly. Skype has been making a lot of software updates that could have altered the proper instructions.
The newer versions of Skype (6.5.0.443 as of this post) have an auto correct feature, which while great in theory sucks in practice. By default Skype is configured to automatically correct spelling as you type. If you are having a simple conversation it could be useful, however for anyone in a professional or technical realm it creates additional pains where you are constantly going back in a message and correcting the auto correct with the technical terms before sending a message. Lame.
Auto correct settings to the rescue! It is easy to turn off auto correct while typing with the following steps:
- Click the Edit menu
- Mouse over Spelling and Grammar
- Uncheck Correct Spelling Automatically
Essentially this means that Microsoft Word autocorrect will continue even if you disable autocorrect in Mac OS through System Preferences. Autocorrect is often one of those features that people either love or hate, but even if you like autocorrect you may find it sometimes erroneously corrects a word or gets in the way, thus there are many. Go to File Options Mail and select Editor Options. Select Proofing AutoCorrect Options. On the AutoCorrect tab, select or clear Replace text as you type. Dec 12, 2013 On Skype (at least, for Macs), go Preferences Messaging Emoticons 'Don't Show.' This will disable them on your own end. However, it won't change how they display for whoever you are chatting with. Is there a particular reason you need to use.

You will still see the red squiggle for words Skype thinks are spelled incorrectly, but power is given back to you for controlling your message.
Autocorrect seems to be enabled by default in OSX 10.11 El Capitan which can be a pain especially in Mail, Skype and TweetDeck or any application which you are typing a lot and simply don’t need it.
Put a stop to It Globally
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences >
Matlab 2017a license key. Click on Keyboard > Text and turn Autocorrect off by unchecking Correct spelling automatically

Or if you see the benefits of it for most Applications and just want to disable one or two – then you can do this in the Applications Edit Menu under Spelling and Grammer and disable‘Check Spelling While Typing’

This also works for OSX 10.10 Yosemite and OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
